From the PrincipalDear Trailside Families; We are almost through the first quarter of the school year. It is hard to believe how quickly this quarter has gone by. There have been many hurdles and we have made it through them all together as a school community. The month of September we focused on the SEL trait of Respect. Students were reminded of what it means to be respectful at home, in the community, and in school. Many students were able to turn in slips of paper that shared the different ways they were respectful. After they shared, they received a pencil. The month of October, we will be focusing on responsibility. Remind your children what it means to be responsible and how they can be responsible at home and at school. We will focus on a character trait each month this school year.We are in cohort 3 of the bus cohorts. This means Trailside has no general education buses for three weeks. I know this is not easy for families and I thank you for still getting your children to school each day. I will send out more information to you closer to October 24th as far as which busses will be running for that three-week time frame. The month of October will be busy with many things taking place. We will have parent-teacher conferences on the 26th and 27th. On both days, students get dismissed at 12:30 so teachers can meet with parents. The 28th is a day off for students. Please note the following dates:October 21st, no school for studentsOctober 26th, early release at 12:30 for parent-teacher conferencesOctober 27th, early release at 12:30 for parent-teacher conferencesOctober 28th, no school for studentsOctober 28th will be our fall festival for families. We are so excited to be able to have it again this year. It has been a while so I hope everyone is able to attend. The PTA puts on a great festival and there are many activities for families to take part in. We encourage you to dress up, but remember to make it appropriate for school. We will have students of all ages, so not too scary either. The 5th and 6th grades will be managing the concession stand as a fundraiser for the 5th and 6th-grade camp that happens in the spring. This will take place from 5:30-7:00. You can pre-purchase tickets or you can purchase them at the door for the activities.November 8th is going to be a day that is new to the calendar. I know this is not for another month, but I wanted to explain it to you since we have not done this before. The district has created an asynchronous day. Teachers will send work home for your child to complete on the 7th, for the 8th. Students will not be coming to school that day. Please have them bring the work back to the teacher on the 9th that they complete the day of the 8th. This is new this year, so I wanted to give you ample notice that there is no school on November 8th.Have a wonderful day,Heather Jones, PrincipalTrailside Elementary School

Nurse Donna's News
Photoscreening will be on November 1st with the Lions Club. The wonderful volunteers of the Lion's Club will be at Trailside on the morning of November 1 for a photo screening of the entire school. This is an important vision screening event and every year we find several children that were previously unaware of a vision deficit. For more information:MD 49 Vision Screening. In 1996, the Alaska Lions joined Dr. Robert Arnold and Orthopedist M.Diane Armitage in their “Mountain of a Project” to eliminate Amblyopia (lazy eye) from Alaska.
As it gets colder, make sure your child has warm clothing for outside recess, and write your name on EVERYTHING! If you need assistance with getting winter gear or boots for your child(ren) - please contact the nurse's office. When you check your Friday folder - also check your kiddo for lice! If you find them - treat them and let the parents of your child's close friends know also. Lice are not considered a health hazard and have nothing to do with cleanliness, but they do circulate around in group settings and can be quite annoying to get rid of. Please treat your child immediately if you find them - your child's teacher thanks you for being proactive with this. 🙂Donna Wilson, BSN, RN, NCSNSchool Nurse, Trailside Elementarywilson_donna@asdk12.orgmain office: 907-742-5500confidential voice mail: 907-742-5501 // text: 907-268-9625 -

Art News
Hello from the art room! We have been busy this month creating Art to Remember projects. They turned out great! Stay tuned for the final results. Our next art lessons session will be all about the changing of seasons and creating some fun fall art. We will also be learning about the seven different elements of art; line, shape, space, color, texture, form, and value. They are the building blocks used to create a work of art. The first element we will be working with is a line!
