    Dear Trailside Families,

This is the first newsletter of the year and I want to say it has been a great start!  Students are learning and staff are working hard!  It is so much fun coming to work each day being able to see students engaged in learning and working to achieve goals.

Benchmark Assessments were completed for MAP growth testing for grades 3-6 and mClass testing for grades K-3.  These tests provide teachers with an idea of where students are at in math and reading.  They also allow a teacher to provide interventions to help them become proficient in both areas.

Ak Reads Act HB114 is part of Alaska’s Strategic Reading Plan for students in grades k-3.  As a part of this act, parents will be receiving notification from the school if their child does not reach proficiency on the screening for reading skills for their grade level.  Teachers use these benchmark screeners to identify areas of strength for each child as well as areas in which they need extra help.  If your child did not meet proficiency on the screener, you will receive a letter from the teacher inviting you to talk about and collaborate on the reading interventions for your child.  These meetings will take place during parent-teacher conferences in October.

There are many parts and pieces to the AK Reads Act.  I would encourage you to go to the state website if you want more information.  Please feel free to contact me with questions and I can do my best to answer them.
