• What's Howling at Trailside?

    Happy 2024 Trailside Families,
It is hard to believe that half of the year is over.  We have a lot of things happening for the second semester that I am really excited about.  A variety of PTA events will be happening as well as school sponsored events.  Watch for information coming out about all of them.  The activities range from family nights, PTA membership dinner, spelling bee, Battle of the Books competitions, and much more.
First and foremost, please check the lost and found.  It is overflowing with items that students have left behind.  There are so many items we don't have room to put anymore.
If you haven't signed up yet, you can get online and get weekly tips to help your child with reading.  You can sign up by texting;  @asdreading to the number 81010. Data rates will apply.  The following link will also help you with tips on helping your child with reading; https://www.asdk12.org/Page/13662. The goal of the AK Reads Act is to ensure that students are learning to read in k-3 so they can be successful in their future grades.  Trailside teachers work to ensure that learning is happening.  If you have questions, please reach out to your child's teacher for more information.
Attendance makes a difference when teaching children.  Attendance is more than just being gone for a day.  Being tardy for school each day does have an effect on children.  They miss the morning meetings time to go over the schedule and the positive interactions with the class and teacher to get the day off on the right foot.  Please make a point to get your child to school on time every day unless they are ill.  A missed school day is a lost opportunity for students to learn. There is a direct correlation between students who attend school regularly and higher academic achievement levels. Students can miss no more than 17 days of school per year. This may seem like a lot, but it's less than two absences per month.
This semester, the focus will be on attendance and being to school on time.  If your child is frequently tardy or absent, you can expect contact from me sharing information about the absences.  The correlation between missing school above directly impacts children's ability to learn to read in grades K-3 and beyond.  So many reading skills are verbally taught with teacher's direction that missing a day puts your child behind.
Thank you for making sure that school is a priority for your children.  Click the links and tabs in the newsletter to see what is happening with student council, PTA and other upcoming activities happening at the school.
    Have a great January.....
    Make it a great day!
