AKSD provides an educational option for deaf and hard of hearing students, ages 3-22, from across Alaska. AKSD fosters and supports the development of both American Sign Language and spoken/written English so that each student has the tools necessary to achieve his or her own personal, academic, social and vocational goals.
Due to the complexities of being housed in multiple individual public school settings, AKSD will support the development and progress towards Bilingual-Biculturalism for students, staff and families. To ensure that all communication is accessible/visible during all instructional and meeting times we require all team members to be fluent and competent in American Sign Language. Fostering communication by setting the example is always everyone’s job!
