DHS Tuesday News Blast 11/9/21

Dear Dimond Families,

On Thursday there will be no school due to a scheduled in-service day.  In the past, we have recognized our Dimond community veterans during a school-wide assembly.  Nonetheless, we want to thank those of you have served and are currently serving in the Armed Forces.

Thank you and Happy Veterans Day!  “The highest obligation and privilege of citizenship is that of bearing arms for one’s country.” ----George S. Patton Jr.

INTERNET USE ALERT:

We have received a large volume of Gaggle Alerts this semester.  The District, ASD has an obligation to ensure that students are not accessing or exposed to inappropriate content or engaging in any destructive online behavior when using the district’s network or computers.

To keep students safe from potentially harmful activity, ASD monitors all activity through all Google applications for any content related to:

  • Drugs & Alcohol
  • Harassment
  • Nudity & Sexual Content
  • Profanity & Vulgar Language
  • Suicide & Self Harm
  • Violence Towards Others

This monitoring process screens documents generated by or shared to students via Google Drive, which includes documents that may be submitted via Google Classroom. These documents include but are not limited to Google Suite and Microsoft Office documents, spreadsheets, and presentations, as well as a variety of image file formats. When questionable content is identified, it is flagged and a report is forwarded to school administrators, who will in turn notify parents or guardians.  Dimond will investigate the situation and follow the appropriate protocol in addressing the concern.  Again, the focus here is to maintain a safe and healthy online learning environment for all our students.

Schools have always borne the responsibility of monitoring students’ school-related work and communication. Please remind your student that things that are written through their district account is being strictly monitored for the above content

Given that all instruction, communication, and work submission is web-based, this safety check has taken on a new form. All monitoring follows the strict guidelines of the Family Educational Rights and Privacy Act (FERPA), which safeguards sensitive student information.

ERIN’S LAW AND BREE’S LAW:

Erin’s Law and Bree’s Law as part of the Alaska Safe Children’s Act. Erin's Law requires the teaching of sexual abuse and sexual assault awareness and prevention for grades K-12 and Bree’s Law requires the teaching of dating violence and abuse awareness and prevention for students in grades 7-12.

We wanted to let you know that your child’s class will be receiving age-appropriate lessons on child sexual abuse and assault prevention education as required under the state’s Alaska Safe Children’s Act. In addition, if your child is in grades 7-12, they will also be receiving age-appropriate information on dating violence and abuse prevention.  DHS will cover the second module in an extended 2nd period on Thursday November 18, 2021.

The curriculum and materials have been approved by the Anchorage School District School Board with input from an advisory committee comprised of parents, students, community, and school staff members and meets the requirements of the Alaska Safe Children’s Act.

If you do NOT want your child to receive the instruction under the Alaska Safe Children’s Act, you must write a letter to the school principal requesting that your child be excused from these lessons.  If you have any questions, please call the curriculum office at Dimond High School at 907-742-7008.

SAFETY REMINDER:

We cannot stress enough the importance of safety in our parking lots.  Students are expected to adhere to the rules for parking on campus and overall laws for operating a vehicle around campus.  Reports of reckless driving will be referred to APD and students are subject to revocation of parking privileges and APD fines.  Thank you for discussing safety with your student and helping us keep our parking lots safe.

Also, the staff parking lot is not a drop-off or pick-up area.  We have noticed a high volume of parents using the staff parking lot, especially in the mornings.  This parking lot is not designed for drop-off/pick-up.  Please help us avoid accidents by using the designated areas for drop-off/pick-up.

With it being dark in the mornings, students and neighborhood members are difficult to see when crossing the road.  Please make sure that you look both ways before turning or crossing at the intersection.  Pedestrians have the ride-away in the crosswalk.

Lastly, please do not park in the fire/red zone of the round-about when dropping off and picking up your student.  The round-about is designed for curb drop-off/pick-up.  All other traffic must continue to move and not stop in the fire zone.  Thank you for your cooperation in helping to keep our campus safe.
