Parent News 11/1/22

Dear Dimond Families:

Parent-Teacher conferences went well!  Thank you to everyone who was able to attend.  We hope that you found the visits with your student’s teachers helpful.  As you know, the 2nd quarter will go quickly due to the Thanksgiving break and the shortened month of December.  Please continue to monitor your student’s progress on Q and do not hesitate to reach out to the teacher or counselor with any concerns or questions.

Also, we wanted to remind you that Tuesday, November 8th is an asynchronous day and there will be no school.  Students are encouraged to work on assignments, lessons, or projects assigned by their teachers.

CHROMEBOOKS:

Please help us in reminding your student to bring their Chromebook, daily.  Also, students must take care of their devices to avoid being charged fines for repairs and replacement Chromebook.  If your student’s Chromebook needs to be repaired the fine will be generated in ParentConnect and can be paid online.  Information regarding the repair and replacement of your student’s Chromebook can be found at this link https://www.asdk12.org/chromebook.

EQUAL OPPORTUNITY SCHOOLS SURVEY:

The EOS survey window will close on November 11th.  Survey questions will address students’ views on their coursework, their school experience, and the ways in which our school supports their educational goals. The results will be used to inform and improve academic support for students now and in the future. Our goal is to encourage students to pursue an interest in Advance Placement courses during their high school journey.  Finally, EOS and the Anchorage School District confirm that any confidential information will only be accessed by District and EOS personnel.

Thank you in advance for your support of this important initiative!  Students will complete the survey today, November 1st.

GAGGLE NOTIFICATION MESSAGE:

To enhance student safety, the District provides a vendor that scans student work created on District servers using District hardware and software.  The purpose is to identify words and phrases that suggest a concern for student safety.

However, when students use Google docs or another District-provided program to chat with friends or perform other non-school communication tasks, the vendor often flags these conversations, for it often misses context or tone, yet staff must still respond.  These responses are disruptive to your student’s education, and in some cases, could be quite alarming.

To help us fully realize the value of Gaggle and to avoid unnecessary disruptions to your student’s day, please ask your student to use their school-issued programs, portals, and hardware for school-appropriate purposes.  They should not use Google docs or any other school-issued applications to chat or communicate with friends unless it’s directly related to a curricular goal.

TRAFFIC PATTERN REMINDER:

Thank you for following the DHS Traffic Pattern.  We noticed that there are still some concerns with keeping cars out of the roundabout and one-way traffic on the access road behind the school.  As a reminder, please review the following.

  • The access road traffic flows one way only. Please do not turn around on the access road; the exit for everyone is on Arlene.

  • The roundabout will be used as a bus zone for our buses that have been fully reinstated: Bus numbers 228, 231, and 241. The roundabout will only be open for pick-up and drop-off after 7:45 am to 1:45 pm on Tuesday through Friday and 8:30 am to 1:45 pm on Monday.

Remember that we will not have buses until December 2nd.  Students who are designated to ride a bus are encouraged to do so. This will be helpful in minimizing the amount of traffic.

VAPING:

Rates of Alaska teens using e-cigarettes are rising. At Dimond, we know many students are using e-cigarettes, or vapes, both in and outside of school. We are concerned about the potential for addiction at an early age, as well as the health risks associated with nicotine and the other chemical ingredients in e-cigarettes. Please help us by having a conversation with your child(ren) about the dangers of vaping. It is illegal for minors to consume and illegal to possess on school property. For more information on statistics about teen use in Alaska, and how to quit you can visit these sites:
