ASD Bond Propositions 2 and 3

Both bonds approved by voters

Funding for improvements at 27 school facilities
2008 Bonds

ASD's two bond propositions will add to and renew Chester Valley Elementary School and Sand Lake Elementary School. Funding is also provided for creating a design plan for future renovation of Girdwood K-8 School. A second proposition funds traffic safety, roof repair, emergency communications systems, mechanical and electrical upgrades, and other building system renewal projects districtwide.

*Reimbursement is subject to annual legislative appropriation. The Alaska legislature has fully funded reimbursement every year since 1992.

About the Anchorage School District's facilities…

  • With over 7.5 million square feet of facilities the district's physical plant is the largest of any public entity in the state.
  • Replacement value of district buildings exceeds $1.5 billion.
  • The district has 99 facilities, housing approximately 50,000 students and 6,000 staff members.
  • Anchorage educates approximately 40 percent of the total student population of the state. Eagle River Elementary
  • The inventory is aging. Sixty-three schools are 20 to 50 years old and eight are over 40 years old.

Why the district needs funding provided by the bonds…

  • Building components wear out. Facility systems only last so long.
  • Functional obsolescence. Over the life of a school, programmatic changes occur that require updating the facility infrastructure.
  • Additional capacity to house the shifting student population.
