• STANDARD 6: Learners engage collaboratively in authentic inquiry during ongoing units of study.

At Campbell STEM Elementary, collaborative and authentic inquiry are key to experiential learning. STEM is incorporated into all areas of student learning and our community, but one of the many ways this is achieved is through PBL (Project Based Learning). PBL’s encourage students to work together, express themselves, and learn through hands-on experiences in large and small group settings, under the guidance and supervision of our trained professional educators. Our educator’s mission during these projects is to observe and provide feedback, but rarely interfere, as mistakes are equally important to the success of the learning process, as are the end results. Students present and display their learning during our bi-weekly showcase.

    Collaboration

Peer to peer collaboration, student to teacher, and teacher to teacher collaboration is emphasized and utilized. Teachers facilitate collaborative learning and inquiry through projects and place-based learning. Both indoor and outdoor environments are used for project completion.

    Authenticity

The importance of authenticity in education is vital to student growth and understanding of the curriculum. Picking projects that students can relate to and make connections to outside their classroom helps students to grasp concepts and instructional materials better and have a lasting impact on their education. Authentic learning opportunities give students a chance to make real life connections with what they are learning and thus have lifelong impacts on their education.
