Annual Giving (GARDEN Initiative)

  • 2017 Winterberry Parent Guild Annual Giving GARDEN Initiative

Give Annually; Reap Dreams; Educate and Nurture

First, thank you for your many contributions to Winterberry—your time; your energy; your adherence to our community’s values. And thank you for your monetary support of this vibrant school.

Although Winterberry receives public funding from the State, this income alone cannot sustain our school’s excellence. Charter schools receive far less funding per student than all other public schools in the Anchorage School District. Additionally, charter schools are tasked with providing/paying for their own building. To bridge this financial gap, the Winterberry Parent Guild (WPG) coordinates many fundraising efforts each year. These fundraisers include events like Enchanted Village and Winter Faire as well as the Head, Heart, Hands Auction in springtime. The simplest of these fundraising efforts is the Annual Giving campaign, known as the GARDEN Initiative: Give Annually; Reap Dreams; Educate and Nurture.

The fruits of all WPG fundraisers are immediately re-invested in the school, with highest priority going to specialized teacher training. Training our teachers is critical for maintaining the extraordinarily high-quality instruction our children receive. Teachers who are new to Waldorf education take foundational courses on the philosophy and teaching methods. They may also observe and be mentored by highly experienced teachers in the Lower 48. Each summer, our teachers continue their professional training with an “Art of the Grades” course that prepares them for the challenge of teaching the entire upcoming year’s worth of new material across all academic subjects as they move up with their class. Historically, the WPG has consistently spent somewhere between $30,000 and $50,000 per year for training, depending on what courses are available and what our teachers need.  During the last school year (2016/2017), the WPG spent just over $40,000 on teacher training.

This year, our 2017 GARDEN Initiative target is $30,000! To reach this target, we’re challenging our community members to max out employer matching donations, appeal to friends, petition grandparents and talk to business contacts. Anyone who is invested in your student’s success and/or simply needs a tax write off to a good cause. (That’s right! The WPG is a 501(c)3 organization – all donations are tax-deductible!)

This is the only WPG fundraiser all year where time, materials or skills are not required. The ask is for 100% community participation and any donation contributed in your family’s name counts toward that goal. While the suggested contribution of $120 per student gets us quickly to our target, the WPG has gratefully accepted donations of any amount from $5 to $500. The amount is less important than that our entire community participates. High community participation can impact our access to grants and future funding opportunities so 100% is a number we strive for and are proud to achieve. Last year, over 94% of our community participated in the GARDEN initiative. Good work, Winterberry!

For a smaller school like Winterberry, the enormous impact of community donations profoundly affects our children’s educational experiences. Please know that your contribution is truly significant in directly supporting, strengthening, and enriching our school.
