Big Brothers Big Sisters Partnership
Big Brothers Big Sisters of Alaska has been working with Hanshew since April 2015. When Hanshew began their partnership with BBBS, Hanshew agreed to have a clothing donation bin outside of the school. Big Brothers Big Sisters of Alaska gives Hanshew 10 cents per pound of clothing that is donated at the donation bin. Hanshew has used the money to buy food for families in need of a meal for the holidays. Families can drop bags of clothing off to donate at the red clothing bin in front of Hanshew. To try to give back, Hanshew has hung a student created Big Brothers Big Sisters sign in the school’s foyer. Hanshew students also send holiday cards and thank you notes.
Carl's Jr. Partnership
Carl’s Jr. has been one of Hanshew’s business partners since 2014. Carl’s Jr. has come into Hanshew and talked about employability skills, and how to do job interviews. Carl’s Jr. also helped Hanshew create the “Start a Conversation” program for students and their parents. To try to give back, Hanshew has hung a Carl’s Jr. banner in the school’s foyer and Carl’s Jr. has a Hanshew’s Hawk symbol in their store on Abbott.
Omega Psi Phi Fraternity Inc.
Gamma Alpha Alpha Chapter
Omega Psi Phi Fraternity, Inc. Gamma Alpha Alpha Chapter, is a men's fraternity that has been partnered with Hanshew since May 2015. Their boys mentoring program began at the end of October 2015. The Chairman of Youth Leadership for the fraternity, came to Hanshew in September 2015 and January 2016 and spoke to students for one hour about the apprenticeship program in Alaska, as well as employability skills students can develop to be successful in the work place. To support Omega Psi Phi Fraternity, Inc. Hanshew students created an Omega Psi Phi Fraternity, Inc. sign and had it hung in the foyer of the school. Hanshew students have also invited Omega Psi Phi Fraternity members to music concerts and sent out Hanshew holiday thank you notes and cards.
Lowes South Anchorage has been one of Hanshew’s business partners since 2013. Volunteers from Lowes have come in to help students with mock job interviews. Lowes has also sent two speakers to help students learn about how to prepare for getting a job and what kinds of questions they should ask during a job interview. In 2015 Lowes gave Hanshew a discounted price on a washer and dryer set and also installed it for free. To try to give back, Hanshew students send holiday cards and create thank you posters. Also, Hanshew students created a big Lowes poster that hangs Hanshew’s front foyer.
Menchie’s has been one of Hanshew’s business partners since 2013. Menchie’s has come in and given class presentations on employability skills and how to be an entrepreneur, as well as helped students with mock job interviews. Menchie’s has given gift certificates, small cups of frozen yogurt and Menchie’s shirts to students at Hanshew. The Menchie’s mascot came to a school assembly that featured the Hanshew volleyball team and tossed Menchie’s shirts and gift certificates into the crowd. They also gave frozen yogurt certificates to the volleyball players. To try to give back, Hanshew has hung a student- created Menchie’s sign in the front foyer. Students have invited Menchie’s to music concerts and sent holiday cards. We are very thankful for Menchie’s.
