First Quarter Waning & Parent/Teacher Conferences:

It is hard to believe, but we are nine instructional days from the end of Quarter I. Now is the time for all students to capture their final assignments, projects, and tests; organize and prioritize among them; and make a plan for how to best complete them. At the end of those nine instructional days, students will not have class on Friday, October 18th, which is a teacher grade reporting day.

The following week is a three-and-a-half day student week: 

  • Monday and Tuesday (10/21-22): Full school days
  • Wednesday (10/23): 11:00 am student release; Parent-Teacher Conferences from 11:45 am - 2:30 pm, and 4:00 - 7:00 pm. 
  • Thursday (10/24): Full school day
  • Friday (10/25): No School for Students; State-Released Professional Development

Monday Motivation

As we’re nearing the end of the quarter, I think it’s a good time to find some motivation and reminders of what is required to attain excellence. So, here’s a quick speech by Dr. Rick Rigsby, who in just 10 minutes, highlights what is needed to make a lasting impact and to be successful. 

Perhaps my favorite line is Dr. Rigsby’s allusion to John Wooden when he asks his audience: “You want to make an impact? Find your broom!”

Fall Sports:

Our students once again had a successful sporting weekend. Tennis participated in Regions on Friday and Saturday, and placed second overall, with Coach Curtis Nelson being named Coach of the Year. The players who qualified for State will be competing at the Alaska Club East this Friday and Saturday. 

Our Flag Football girls won all of their games on Friday against Dimond, and our Tackle Football fought hard against strong West teams, and are headed to Juneau to play the Crimson Bears in the first round of the tournament this coming weekend.

The 2019 State Cross Country Championships were held at Bartlett on Saturday. South’s Kaleb Beloy placed sixth amongst all Division I runners. Our girls team, consisting of: Ava Earl, Lucy Young, Robyn Miller, Nancy Biegel, Elliana Zock, Grainne Rogacki, and Elizabeth Novakovich won the overall State Title and brought home the GPA award!

Our Volleyball girls traveled to play in Phoenix last week where they placed fifth, and our marksmen on the Riflery team were in action against East.

Week of Kindness:

South High School will be conducting a Week of Kindness the week of November 12th - 15th. The week’s purpose is to recognize our common humanity and the need to feel safe, to belong, and to connect with those around us.  Activities will occur throughout the week to highlight ways we can better connect and understand one another. 

Halloween Guidelines:

This year Halloween falls on a Thursday. Although costumes are not banned, students are still expected to meet dress code expectations. No masks are allowed, and nothing that obscures a student’s face to the point of them being unrecognizable is allowed. Please help us keep the focus on learning while acknowledging the Hallowed day.
