Government Hill Elementary became a certified ASD Green School in October 2018. The 6th-grade Spanish Immersion students at Government Hill, with the help of their teacher Mike Cragen, oversee and run the recycling program at the school. The students have developed a unique recycling protocol where they collect, sort, provide recycling feedback to classrooms, and take the recycling to the recycling roll-off. The 6th-grade students have done an outstanding job at creating a program that generates ownership and education while promoting sustainability and waste reduction. Great Job Government Hill!

6th grade Spanish Immersion students at Government Hill oversee and run our school-wide recycling efforts. Each week they collect all paper recycling, sort through recycling to eliminate contamination, provide written feedback to classes, choose a weekly Green Star Award winner, and write/read a recycling announcement over the intercom.
Sustainability Plan and Goals
At Government Hill, our goals are to further reduce contamination in our recycling and generate more school-wide recycling education. We plan on reaching our goals by:
Communicating with classrooms what is not allowed in the recycling bin
Continue enforcing our recycling slip systems
Collect recycling data and post it on our recycling bulletin board
Create school-wide incentives to promote our contamination reduction campaign
Host an earth day event to raise awareness towards recycling and waste reduction
