• IMMIGRation in ASD

    • Dear ASD Community,

The Anchorage School District (ASD) is carefully reviewing recent Presidential executive orders and directives to assess their potential impact on our students, families, and staff. We want to assure you that our priority remains ensuring that every school is a safe, welcoming, and supportive space for all students and families.

More than 40 years ago, the U.S. Supreme Court ruled that all children in the United States, regardless of their or their parents’ immigration status, are entitled to a public education. ASD is proud to honor this commitment by providing access to education for every child. Additionally, the federal Family Educational Rights and Privacy Act (FERPA) protects your child’s privacy by prohibiting ASD from sharing student-specific information with anyone other than the student’s parents or legal guardians, except in specific situations such as when required by a judicial warrant or court order.

ASD remains committed to following established protocols when interacting with law enforcement, including federal immigration authorities. While complying with all applicable laws, we are steadfast in protecting the learning environment and the rights of our students and families. Any immigration official seeking to enter ASD property will be required to present a judicially signed warrant. This warrant will then be reviewed by ASD’s legal counsel to ensure it meets the necessary legal standards before any action is taken.

In addition, we are closely monitoring the federal Office of Management and Budget’s (OMB) memorandum temporarily freezing certain types of federal assistance. As of January 29th, 2025, the OMB has rescinded this memorandum. ASD will continue to monitor developments on this issue, and other executive orders pertaining to K-12 education.

Please know that we are dedicated to providing updates as we receive more information and will remain transparent in our efforts to prioritize the well-being of all students and staff.

      Respectfully,

      Jharrett Bryantt, Ed. D.
      Superintendent
      Anchorage School District
