Heather Fleming
Mears Middle School Librarian Heather Fleming has served Mears for 15 years promoting literacy, serving the community, and bringing positive energy and innovative ideas.
Ms. Fleming goes above and beyond her position to provide a safe, engaging, and inviting space for students, staff, and community members. Her help developing Panther Camp, a transitional support program for incoming seventh-graders, is a shining example of her organizational leadership.
Her supervisor, Principal Eric Backman said, “Ms. Fleming is the glue that helps bind our school community together, especially during these days of separation and remote instruction. She is a tremendous asset to Mears’ school culture and student achievement, and this impact is evident throughout our school community.”
Ms. Fleming continues to dedicate substantial time and effort to ensure the success of the Mears library and her fellow District librarians, developing study groups to enhance their skills. Her work on the Mears Leadership Team often introduces new professional development opportunities to staff.
Beyond her dedication to students and other librarians, Ms. Fleming provides critical technical support for Mears teachers. She regularly attends technology trainings and brings Mears the latest educational programs and implements new tech-savvy strategies – all while executing her responsibilities as a librarian to 750 students.
Numerous teachers shared their support, with one saying, “Since the pandemic, Ms. Fleming has continued an online version of her book club, and she designed an online book checkout system where students can request books from the library. She serves as a leader in our school – filling a variety of valuable roles, and she performs them to highest standards.”
The Administration invites the Board to join in recognizing Heather Fleming as a Denali Award winner for the example of excellence she sets for the entire Anchorage School District community.
