Overview

  • ASD is committed to ensuring a safe and supportive learning environment for all our students and staff. During the 2024–2025 school year, the Office of Emergency Management (ASD OEM) successfully piloted the use of portable metal detectors at seven school sites: Wendler Middle School (two deployments), Goldenview Middle School, Eagle River High School, SAVE High School, Service High School, and South Anchorage High School.

Based on the outcomes and lessons learned from the pilot phase, the metal detector program will move to full implementation for the 2025–2026 school year. This initiative remains a proactive safety measure—not a disciplinary one—and is part of the District’s broader commitment to layered school safety strategies.

Mobile metal detectors will continue to be rotated across ASD campuses rather than being permanently installed at any one location. Screenings may occur on a random basis or in response to a specific safety concern.

Thank you for your continued support as we work together to provide a safe and welcoming environment for all students and staff.
