Benefits Eligibility
-
New hires
Medical insurance and life insurance benefit eligibility, and the opportunity to participate in the Flexible Spending Account program vary based on the contractual requirements for newly hired employees in each employee group.
The employee groups table below shows the benefits eligibility waiting period for newly hired employees beginning their employment with the Anchorage School District.
Benefit eligibility waiting period refers to the time period that the employee has to wait before elected benefits are available. Employees must enroll in benefits within 45 days of their start date for benefits to be effective.
Current employees
Current Anchorage School District employees who are transferring between employee groups, are changing their number of work hours, or are returning from an extended leave of absence may have different benefit eligibility waiting periods. Please contact the ASD Benefits Department for information at 907-742-4200.
COBRA coverage
-
Employees and/or qualified dependents losing Aetna health insurance coverage are entitled to continue the ASD group heath care benefits for up to 18 months (depending on your qualifying event) by paying the full cost of the plan.
If you enroll a dependent child and they no longer meet the eligibility requirements, a COBRA packet will be sent to the employees' address on file with the district.
For employees in the AEA (Teachers), Local 71 (Custodians) or Teamsters 959 (Bus) groups, please contact your respective health plan administrators for COBRA information available under your insurance plan.
