Special Education Options

  • As we move into another summer here in Alaska, the ASD Special Education Department is excited to share a variety of summer distance learning opportunities to keep all kids active and engaged in learning. Access to special education supports and collaboration are available for all summer learning options. 

     

    High School Summer Options:  

    Four Week Summer Extension of 4th Quarter Online

    Students who have a failing grade in their fourth quarter online courses have the option of working up to four additional weeks to complete their work. The session runs from June 1-26. Special Education staff will be working collaboratively with teachers to support accommodations and modifications of curriculum based on student IEPs and 504 plans. You will receive additional information from your school if your student qualifies for this program. 

     

    Grades: 9-12, any student with a failing grade (F)

    Credit Recovery

    Students who have previously failed any course in high school may retake it through a six-week iSchool course to recover their credit. The session runs from June 8-July 17.

    Original Course Credit or Retake for Higher Grade

    Students may take six-week courses via iSchool as a way to free up their future schedules by getting some classes completed early or they may retake a course for grade replacement. The session runs from June 8-July 17.

     

    Middle School students have limited online summer offerings.   Rising 8th graders are eligible to take one class.  Options include Algebra Readiness, Forensic Science, or Health.  7th graders who have completed Pre Algebra are eligible to take Algebra Readiness.

    AK Learns

     

    The Alaska Department of Education & Early Development (DEED) offers free online courses for grades 9 through 12 for all Alaska students. Online teachers, outside ASD, are available to support students as they work through the curriculum. Students continue enrollment in their local school.

    • Enrollments will be on a first-come, first-served basis. Deadline for requesting courses is June 26, 2020, but course start dates may begin at any time during Summer 2020.
    • Summer offerings will be full semester courses through FLVS Global (FLVS teachers with DEED on-the-ground support).
    • Offerings are intended to help students catch up or move ahead in preparation for the next school year, and/or to supplement/enrich summer learning.
    • A student may take either semester 1 or 2, OR a full course.
    • Students will have approx. 20 weeks (equivalent of a full semester) to complete a semester-long course.
    • Any course in FLVS Global School full catalog is available for summer enrollment.

    Middle School Summer Options:  

    Summer Sign-up and Paper/Pencil Packets

    We are pleased to offer families the opportunity to download printable iReady learning packets in Math and Language Arts for grades 6-8. The iReady curricular packets are designed to provide Math and Language Arts practice for students that reinforce grade-level standards. If a family is unable to download or print the packets, they can request a paper packet be mailed to their home. If you have printing capabilities at home, you may print your own selected materials by simply downloading the digital packets and printing the pages you choose. Flexibility is provided for you to download packets that best meet your child’s needs. Functional curriculum is also available. 

     

    Families who are already receiving paper packets will automatically be included in the summer mailing lists, sign-up is not required.

    Acceleration and Review Learning Modules using APEX Tutorials

    APEX Tutorials are supplemental curriculum that can be used to make sure students are ready for academics at the next level. These tutorials offer both review/remediation as well as acceleration of learning. These tutorials are available in a variety of languages, translated within APEX itself. APEX Tutorials are monitored by an ASD teacher with support from special education staff. APEX Tutorials are currently available and will extend through the summer. Students struggling academically can build skills by completing the pre-test assessment.  Areas of learning will be identified and lessons supporting growth will be included to help fill in gaps in learning.  Special Education staff will work collaboratively with teachers to provide support with these APEX Tutorials. APEX Tutorials are open to all students who choose to participate in this opportunity.

    Families of elementary students will receive information via postcard with QR code and 742-HELP number with guidance on how to sign up for summer learning opportunities, including how to receive a paper packet of review materials for Reading and Math at the end of the school year. Functional curriculum is also available. We will make it easy to request follow-up materials through the summer. Flexibility is provided to request packets that best meet your child’s needs. If you have printing capabilities at home, you may print your own selected materials by simply downloading the digital packets and printing the pages you choose.     Math and Reading Review and Acceleration

    Families looking for a structured Math and Reading alternative with which most students are familiar may sign up for MathWhizz and Lexia access through the summer. An ASD teacher will monitor student progress and touch base with families throughout the program. MathWhizz and Lexia allow students to work at their skill level.  Students with disabilities are able to build skills based on their needs. Special Education staff will work collaboratively with teachers to provide support with these on-line programs. Information is available on the ASD Summer Tutoring Support website.

    Acceleration Learning Modules using APEX Tutorials for Grades 5-6

    APEX Tutorials are supplemental curriculum that can be used to make sure students are ready for academics at the next level. These tutorials are available in a variety of languages, translated within APEX itself. Students may accelerate their learning if they are ready for more challenging work. They are ideal for families looking for a structured and rigorous curriculum that adjusts to the individual pace and skills of the student and is monitored by an ASD teacher. APEX Tutorials are currently available and will extend through the summer.

    Preschool Summer Supports


    ASD Preschool will continue to offer a distance delivery model for families to support embedded learning opportunities at home with consultation from an ASD special education preschool teacher. Supports may include small group ZOOM sessions and suggestions for early learning and speech-language activities at home.

     


    Extended School Year (ESY)

     

    Extended School Year (ESY) is a summer Special Education program for students who have already been identified to receive these services based on the IEP. The ESY session will run from June 9 - July 23, on Tuesdays, Wednesdays, and Thursdays. ESY will be closed the week of June 29-July 3. If you are unsure whether your student is eligible for ESY, please contact your special education case manager.
